Paris Goodyear-Brown, Scott Riviere & Janine Shelby – Child Therapy – Tools, Toys and Techniques

Child Therapy: Tools, Toys and Techniques
by Paris Goodyear-Brown, Scott Riviere and Janine Shelby
Simply learning the theories of child development and therapy does not make us better or even more effective child therapists. Watch and learn from a talented trio of child clinicians as they demonstrate 10 playful, creative and interactive techniques for connecting with children and helping them cope with sadness, anger, anxiety and trauma.

It is easy to feel stuck in therapy with children, trying to figure out the best way to connect with and help them with their problems. It’s even easier to fall into the rut of using the same old toys and games over and over, expecting different therapeutic results. Goodyear-Brown, Shelby and Riviere understand this and know their way around the therapeutic playroom. They demonstrate 10 play-based techniques using a myriad of materials and activities including drawing, puppets, role-play, storytelling, arts-and-crafts, and mindfulness—all proven to help your young clients better cope with anxiety, sadness and trauma.

Using a “prescriptive-eclectic” approach which matches evidence-based CBT-oriented techniques with the child’s symptoms, they fully describe and playfully demonstrate enjoyable, easy-to-learn and effective tools for your therapeutic toolbox. You will learn to creatively engage with your young clients in a flexible and non-threatening way; keeping them interested, engaged and moving towards solutions to their problems. In turn, they will enjoy their time with you and see that problems can be shared, measured and solved.

WHAT THERAPISTS ARE SAYING…
“Nothing is better than watching the experts show us how their techniques are done–unless they also explain the rationale, which they do here. This video includes fantastic descriptions and enactments of ten techniques to help play therapists and others working with children to overcome anger and worry. That the techniques can be used with many ages is an added bonus!”
—Julie Nash, PhD

In Depth
It has been said that play is the language of children, and toys their words. You will increase your fluency in this language by watching these three masterful child therapists in action.
The techniques demonstrated in this video are organized according to the presenting problems you are most likely to encounter in your day-to-day clinical work with children:

Anger Management Techniques

  • Lose the Bruise
  • The Madometer
  • Angry Andrew and Friends

Stress Management and Anxiety Reduction Techniques

  • All Tangled Up
  • Frightened Freddy
  • Breathing with Bubbles

Interventions for Treating Traumatized Children

  • Zip It
  • Blameberry Pie
  • Monster Ears
  • Menu of Soothing Strategies

While meaningful therapeutic work with children involves far more than just using techniques, watching these demonstrations will provide you with a set of powerful tools to expand your clinical repertoire.
