Leanne Campbell – EFT Masterclass Volume 4: Grief and Loss
EFT Masterclass Volume 4: Grief and Loss
by Leanne Campbell
In this final video in our EFT Masterclass series, Leanne Campbell artfully works with a couple attempting to rebuild their relationship following the earlier traumatic loss of their newborn infant.
When the loss of a child compounds existing relational stressors, and couples teeter at the intersection of coming together and falling apart, clinicians may feel daunted by the sheer depth of their emotional pain. EFT provides a powerful model for helping clinicians navigate this challenging terrain.
By watching master therapist Leanne Campbell at work, you will learn to utilize and adapt key EFT principles and techniques when working with couples experiencing grief, loss and trauma. In the process, you will learn to more quickly highlight and reverse destructive relational patterns to help couples avoid distancing from one another. As your clients learn methods to deepen their attachment, they will invariably move closer, while avoiding the inevitable pitfalls associated with loss and other traumatic experiences.
WHAT THERAPISTS ARE SAYING…
“A masterful demonstration of how to use the client’s bodily felt sense and a keen awareness of the attachment bond to deepen emotion and help a grieving couple to stand together in the aftermath of a traumatic loss. I am struck by Leanne’s presence and empathic attunement—the couple cannot help but feel safe and held. She works respectfully, is transparent about her goal in the session and diligently supports the couple to stay with their bodies and the present process.”
—Dimitrij Samoilow, ICEEFT-certified EFT-trainer and clinical psychologist, Oslo, Norway.
“A great way to learn techniques for helping couples navigate the grief process using attachment informed ways of relating as they try to heal from such a devastating shared experience. This would be a great video for any marriage therapist helping a couple navigate these types of complex emotional issues.”
—Alyssa Gavulic, PhD, Psychotherapist, Niceville, FL
“Highlights the complexities of the grieving process and the compounding factors which influence how others express their grief. This video is a great resource for anyone counseling grieving individuals as well as professors wanting to educate students on the grieving process.”
—Jillian M. Blueford, PhD, LPC-C, Clinical Assistant Professor, School Counseling, University of Denver
“A great resource for any professor teaching a Marriage and Family course. The video provides an excellent example of merging technique with microskills. Additionally the demonstration emphasizes how important attachment is as a variable when working with a couple who has experienced loss and is in the grief process.”
—Eric Jett, PhD, NCC, Clinical Faculty, Southern New Hampshire University
“This video demonstrates some universal struggles that clinicians may encounter when dealing with grief and loss, while hearing the narrative tied to it. Very useful in showing how grief and loss effects relationships and how to work with the couple on offering support to one another so that they don’t go through their grief alone.”
—Andy Felton, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stout

In Depth
Four years after the tragic loss of their newborn son Hunter, Sean and Jenn are expecting a child. Though this is a potentially bonding experience, the couple has struggled to remain connected in the face of past and ongoing life stressors. Jenn’s desperate attempts to pull Sean back have left him feeling interrogated, and the couple is desperately locked in what EFT creator Sue Johnson calls the pursue/withdraw cycle.
By watching this video, you will learn to more effectively recognize destructive relational patterns like the pursue/withdraw cycle, and be able to help couples become more Accessible, Responsive and Engaged (EFT’s A.R.E concept). You will also learn to utilize Sue Johnson’s five “tango moves” to help couples summarize and integrate all they have learned in the therapeutic encounter. Watching and learning from this master clinician will be a boon to your clinical practice with couples facing seemingly insurmountable relationship challenges.
